Them: The world of hobbies


  • To activate pupils’ vocabulary on the topic while listening, reading, writing and speaking skills;
  • To develop the abilities of working in pairs and groups;
  • To develop pupils’ outlook about different hobbies and interests;
  • To involve pupils into communicative activities using interactive methods of communication;
  • To practice the structures I like / I don’t like; be fond of, be interested in;

Equipment: a multimedia projector, a computer, a screen, a book by Oksana Karpiuk, an audio player, handouts.

Lesson plan

I. The beginning of the lesson

1. Greeting

 T: Good morning, friends!

School is waiting

Can’t be late

Hurry! Hurry!

Half past eight

Out the door

And down the street

Then softly and quietly

Take your seat!

 2. Warming up activities

  T: Good morning, friends!

     I love learning English

     I can read, I can write,

     I can speak English too.

     I love learning English

     And what about you?

Ps: We want to study in Oxford

      And visit British Isles,

      To start our learning English,

      To read, to write, and to be bright.

II. The main body of the lesson

1. Introduction the topic of the lesson

T: The topic of our lesson is ”The world of hobbies”. “Tell me what your hobby is and I’ll tell you what kind of person you are”. This is probably just as fair as the well-known saying. “Tell me who your friend is and I’ll tell you what kind of person you are”. And it really is easy to get to know what a person is like if you know his hobby. Some people are fond of collecting different things, the others prefer painting, embroidering, sport, dancing… The world of hobbies has great opportunities for person’s creative potential, self-expression.

2. The objectives of the lesson

Today we will:

– speak, read, listen and write about activities we do in our free time;

– tell about your hobbies;

– play different games.

3. Checking on homework.

T: Now, let’s check your homework. You had to prepare stories about your favourite hobbies. You can see some pictures on the board. They are really great. Who is ready to tell us about your interests? Let’s listen to Dasha, she will tell us about her hobby.

P 1: My hobby is sport. I like playing football, basketball, tennis. I train on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It helps me to be sporty, strong and healthy. Also I collect stickers, listen to music, dance. My collection is about animals, flowers, Barbies. Sometimes I walk with my friends or play computer games. I am fond of travelling because it’s great. T: Nice answer, thank you Dasha . Do you like Dasha’s hobby? Who else likes sport?

Well, Sasha, can you tell us about your interests?

P 2: I like swimming. I have got a nice swimming suit and train every day .I started it when I was 8.It is cool and good for my health. I have got many rewards. I won competitions. Also I am interested in computer games. My friends and I play them together. It’s exciting. I think my hobbies are great.

T: And Lera will tell us about her hobby.

P 3: Hi, my name is Lera. My hobby is dancing. I started it 2 years ago. I go dancing 3 times a week. I have got many beautiful costumes. I took part in different contests. My hobby helps me to be pretty, sporty and popular. Sometimes I am good at writing poems. They are about nature .I am really happy to have such interesting hobbies.

4. Vocabulary practice

 T: Now look at these hobbies once again. Name the word coming up and making a circle. (playing sports, singing, dancing, cooking, travelling, fishing, gardening, writing stories, taking photographs, watching TV, listening to music, reading books, going to the theatres collecting stamps…).

7. Game “Mimes”.

 – Let`s split into two groups, according to your birthdays (spring-summer, autumn-winter).The pupils whose birthdays are in spring-summer will show different hobbies to those who were born in autumn-winter. Be attentive! You are to give spilleautomater dead or alive 2 the names of different kinds of activities in turn. (Hobbies are written on the cards: reading, drawing, singing, dancing, cooking, knitting, fishing, writing stories, taking photographs, playing the piano).

8.  Listening

Pre – listening task.
